Abuja; Monday, 16 September 2013: To mark the attainment of more than one million hits on its web platform, The Right to Information Initiative (R2K) today launches a platform for tracking cases and decision on FoI implementation in Nigeria.
Re-launched in 2011, the R2K website received more than one million visitors in less than two years. Welcoming this development, Ms. Ledum Bhule, R2K’s Program Officer said; this landmark shows that there is huge appetite for information on how our government manages our money in pursuit of the people’s business. The biggest traffic we have received has been from people looking for information in specific areas. It is only natural that we should find ways to fulfill this need more effectively.”
R2K was instrumental in the advocacy for the adoption of Nigeria’s FoI Act. Since then, R2K has remained committed to promoting open and democratic government in Nigeria through advocacy for full implementation of the Act and building effective partnerships with diverse constituencies to make this possible. This effort helped to bring about the passage of the FOI Act in 2011. Once again, R2K acknowledges the indispensible support and contribution of the growing Access to Information Community in Nigeria.
R2K thanks all advocates of freedom of information for the sustained support in ensuring that in the advocacy for FOI implementation is kept strong. The FOI movement in Nigeria is gaining strength and momentum, with an increasing demand for compliance with the FOI Act from groups and individual members of the public, demonstrated in the rapidly developing jurisprudence on FOI.
In marking its most recent milestone achievement, R2K hereby launches its FOI Implementation case tracker, which monitors developing FOI cases and will provide prompt access to judgments, rulings and decisions on access to information cases in Nigeria. Recent cases on FOI can be found on R2K’s website @ www.r2knigeria.org/caselaws on right to information. The tracker will be regularly upgraded and revamped.
R2K invites its constituency to participate in building an informed and empowered FOI community, and encourages advocates to continue to pursue with unrelenting vigour and commitment the establishment the principles of Open Government in Nigeria.
